Going plastic-free at home: a room-by-room start

Nobody goes plastic-free overnight, and the all-or-nothing version usually ends in burnout. Here's a calmer, room-by-room approach that actually sticks, starting with the easiest wins.

Start in the bathroom

The bathroom is the lowest-hanging fruit because so much of its plastic is single-use and easy to swap. Begin with the things you replace most often.

  1. Switch to paper-wrapped bamboo toilet paper and tissue to kill the plastic film
  2. Move to bar soap or refillable dispensers instead of new plastic bottles
  3. Try a bamboo toothbrush and a refillable razor
  4. Keep a small bin for 'hard to recycle' items so they don't default to landfill

Then the kitchen

The kitchen has more plastic but also more reusable alternatives. Replace items as they run out rather than tossing everything at once, that's cheaper and less wasteful.

  • Beeswax wraps or silicone lids instead of cling film
  • Glass or stainless containers for leftovers and bulk goods
  • Reusable produce and bulk bags for shopping
  • Bar dish soap or refill stations where you can find them

The mindset that makes it last

Don't throw out working plastic just to feel green, that's more waste, not less. Use what you have, then replace it with a better option when the time comes.

Progress beats purity. A household that's 70% plastic-free forever does more good than one that's 100% for a month and gives up.

The greenest swap is the one you'll actually keep making.
